INTRODUCTION

Carl Gustav Jung wrote that color and form are the two concepts that allow one to communicate directly with his or her unconscious. This idea became the foundation for Tarot Carre Noir. It was inspired by the works of Kazimir Malevich, the originator of Suprematism, a unique and revolutionary art movement of the 20th century. This style of visual arts emphasized color and form as the supreme ways of depicting reality.

In Malevich’s art these two prime elements harmoniously interact with each other, an evocative duet of expression and abstraction, conveying with simple means a sense of space, depth, and vast range of human emotions and feelings. Colorful squares, circles, and rectangles and their combinations on a white background serve as prototypes for all forms that exist in the real world. These prototypes are as easily understandable as “some planet or a whole planetary system.” (K. Malevich) From them, one can create any notional model of the world.

Color, according to Malevich — particularly black or white — embodies the energy inherent in any geometric form. Black, white, and red — these are the colors with especially free and pure energies. In culture and in human perception these three colors have exact corresponding meanings. According to Malevich, every pure color carries its own semantic meaning. In general, he used ideal abstract colors and shapes as symbols for the humanity’s ability to transcend beyond the natural world, capacity to move toward theosophy and mysticism, and desire to express the spiritual reality that lies beyond the physical one.

Thus, the Arcana of Carre Noir Tarot, rooted in suprematist and figurative compositions, depart in their iconography from traditional thingness. They allow to extract from each symbol and each image a pure emotion and vector that facilitates vivid and multifaceted Tarot readings.
